When it comes to the art of CGing, I'm an amateur. A rookie. A grasshopper. Just...not good.
I've come a long way since my start, but I've still got a looooong way to go before I can really hope to be a good CG artist. So without further ado, here's a gallery (?) of my works, in reverse chronological order.
Fairy
Arist: Aiyanna Al'Shairen
No, there was no better name. >_> Yet another Aiyanna piece, she drew this, but didn't give it to me to CG. Actually, a friend of hers from a message board asked her if he could. When she posted it up at her DeviantArt, I sorta felt...broken. ^^;; "Why?! I want to CG it! Aiyanna, give me the drawing!"
Well, she did, and this is the result of my furious endeavour to reclaim my spot. >_< It took me a long time, since I utilized the smudge and blur tools a lot. I had to get it perfect...
The photo in the background is from the cherry tree in my front yard. It was springtime, so it had flower blossoms on it. Unfortunately, there weren't any real good angles to have a fairy sitting on a branch with flowers in the background. One smart blur later, I'm got an enviroment that...sorta fits.
I like this piece. Yes. I really do.
Haya of the Night (Unusual Concern)
Eee! I love this pic! Not only is Haya very cute, but the emotion is portrayed exactly how I first pictured it. ^_^
Another calligraphic line drawing, because they are teh roxor. Haya is a vampire, more or less, and is a major character in what I call my novel-thingie-ma-bobber, Revival. At age fourteen, she's actually one of the older ones, and - Err, I'm done.
My envisionment of vampires is a lot different from what the masses think. To me, they can survive in the sunlight, but looking at a bright source of light directly can kill them (ie, the sun, the moon, ultra-bright lamps XD). They don't feast on blood, but rather need two pints of it a month in order to survive - and they don't like having to get any more than that. Once they mature and display concern and compassion for others, they grow feathery black wings (not seen in this pic). ^^;; And also, probably my most unique feature - they don't have real pupils. Instead, they pretty much ignore the laws of the regular eye, and instead of having an "opening" in the iris, their center of their irises create transparent sections in order for light to get into the actual eye nerves. Therefore, their sight levels vary, and when the fake pupils aren't there, their eyes act differently.
Well, that was the dissection of a vampire - see you next time!
From the Darkness (Lost Wind)
I am and I'm not happy with this one. The original drawing wasn't exactly that good to begin with, but I needed something to do, so I colored it. On the other hand, I adore this picture for the fact that it looks really cool (first greyscale version), the texture brushes I used, and the improving highlight technique. ...So the goods far outweigh the bads. :3
This was another calligraphic line drawing, and as I've said before, they make bloody excellent CG pics. ^^;; This one, because it's an up-close shot with the major elements being skin and hair, was extremely quick - I'd wager just a bit over an hour. (Zomg!)
From the start, I had this envisonment of the final result being in greyscale, though I did it in color for the sake of my sanity. Once I was finished, though, I changed it all to greys, with the only exception being the eye. Because it was cool, and because it stood out, I kept it yellow and put it in.
By the way, she's wearing, like, three shirts underneath her overcoat. XD
Chibi Senka: Land Pirate
Artist: Aiyanna Al'Shairen
I consider this a fanart. ^^;; Aiyanna drew it for me one night when she couldn't get to sleep, and gave it to me the next day in school. And I absolutely love it.
Chibi Senka here wasn't that difficult to do, but I at the time, I was experimenting with highlights. I shrudder on the thought of the blinding white I put on her, but that's just the way it turned out, and I don't like going back and tampering with my past work (unless it's just gawd-awful). It's cute and one of my favorites.
If you've noticed, there are (currently) two pictures of Senka here - this one, and the Duo Sunset pick (see below). And if you're a close observer, you might notice that the buckle on her trenchcoat-thing keeps changing sides. Why is that?! Well, it's because in the very first drawing of Senka, her buckle was on her right-hand side. In the second drawing of her, I put the buckle on her left-hand side because she is right handed. The pic Aiya draws off of is a copy of the first one, so she draws the buckle opposite of me. ^^;;
Zephyros
While checking out which one this was, I screamed out "ZEPHYROS!". He's the now-deceased captain of the ship Senka (below) grew up on. The drawing orginally was a calligraphic line one, which made the CG quite easy.
I love this one. ;_; I don't even know what to say about it. Oh. At this time, I was testing out a new eye technique, and even though it's a side view, I think the end result is pretty good. What I liked about the styling was that it could also be used on the hair, though I didn't do too much with that.
The details that I missed here are not exactly possible to do with a calligraph drawing. This means Zephyros's eternal five-'o-clock shadow and the soul patch underneath his bottom lip. The look works best on him as opposed to a beard and stuffies. He's too smexy for that. XD
He's a cocky man, Zephyros. Pirate, but deceased...and a body snatcher. Heh. Enough said.
Duo Sunset
A piece by me. ^^;; This is Senka Hjorrdis, Land Pirate - no, not bandit! They're completly different!
I drew this during world history class, with the mindset that I wanted to draw a complete side view, and one that was in proportion...exluding facial features. -_-;;
Because it was a more detailed drawing, I used a 2px brush. That turned out to be a mistake, because the outline is bumpy, which still bothers the crap outta me. The only difference between this and the original is that Senka wore a chain. I was getting aggrivated by that point, so I decided to just cut it out.
This is also the first time I attempted water and the sun's affect on the sky. I actually like the water to an extent, and even though I could change it, I don't want to. :3 And I really like the sky. It's purty. And like I've said before: Fear my non-circular sun!
Bring It
Artist: Aiyanna Al'Shairen
Yet another Aiyanna piece - a series of either two or three. Here we have a samurai girl. The pose comes from the back of Rurouni Kenshin vol. 1, and drawn way back when we were in seventh grade (two years ago).
Her hair is supposed to be black, but black doesn't really give off much of a shadow or shine, so it was changed to a navy-ish tone.
Something that didn't turn out to well was the katana sheath. It's hard to draw out straight lines (proving once again that I need a graphical pen), but I did what I could.
This was just another one of those quick CGs. By "quick", that usually means 3-4 hours. - -;; It wasn't that much of a challenge, but I just didn't feel up to CGing for a while.
The fire background is a slightly modified version of this one. Instead of using text, all you have to do is make it so that the only visible part is the person itself. Then click on a visible layer, do CTRL+A, and then Edit > Copy Merged. Paste into a new canvas and then do the turtorial. ^^;;
Nature's Tears (Firefly)
Artist: Aiyanna Al'Shairen
In the beginning, this wasn't turning out too well, but I just kept on going since Aiyanna requested I color this in for her...and I can't exactly say no to my best friend. Once I got the fairy colored in, dechunkified some lines (it looked like she was wearing a shirt but indeed she wasn't) , and painted in the background, it looked pretty good. The final touch, the glow, was a half-hour process of trial and error.
Everyone seems to really like this piece. I printed it out on some photo paper and brought it to school the next day. People were very intrigued and thought it was a masterpiece. My world history teacher saw it while I was drawing, picked it up, examined it, and said, "Wow, that's really good." Then he turned to the class and held it up, going, "Hey, isn't this really good"? XD
In the end, the fairy looked like a firefly, hence the subtitle.
Persimmon
Artist: Dave Lister
This was one of those "need to color for strange reasons" pictures. The artist, Dave Lister, is responsible for the webcomic Paradox Lost, one of two webcomics I bother reading. ^^;;
This girl, from a comic he's working on called Persimmon, has a very, very creepy resemblance to myself. She's the main female protaginst of this obscure Persimmon, being descriped as "genki", a tomboy, one who prefers comfort over style, and with a butterfly tattoo on her lower back.
Since this art was posted up in 2004, there has been no news of Persimmon. But because I needed something to color, I picked this. The only problem would probably be the lines for the "skin details".
ANN Holiday (The ANN Elf)
Artist: Aiyanna Al'Shairen
AnimeNewsNetwork runs a contest every winter for people to design a holiday banner and have the banner posted for two weeks. This year, with confidence in my Photoshop abilities and some new CG skills to work with, I asked Aiyanna to draw me their mascot, Jaddress. Of course, I didn't win, since the winner had this insanely good drawing (most likely a person that has CGed for ten years), but it was fun in the process.
Of all the CG drawings, I probably spent the most time on this single one. Every highlight, every shadow, every nook and cranny had to be painted and perfect, then perfected and touched up. I probably spent a good seven hours on this, and another hour and a half touching up and fixing things.
I really, really love this to no end. The eyes are brilliant, but the hair is my favorite, since the highlights were placed perfectly. I'm disappointed that I didn't win, but, since I am who I am, I didn't epect to. X3
Nothing Explains The Heart
Ahh...mushy gushy pictures. You gotta have them every once in a while, and this fufilled my criteria as an artist: At least one romantic drawing, CGed as well. ^^;;
The characters, Eowyn (left) and Tomo are from my novel-thing, Revival. Eowyn is an elf, Tomo is a tiger lycanthrope, hence the stripes. At the time I drew this, my real-life friends that I based this off of were dating, so I gave this to her as a mini Christmas present. ^_^
This is really just one of those Saturday afternoon sessions. I drew it before I went to sleep then colored it the next day, with MythBusters accompaning me. XD It took a little longer than I had thought, since seperate layer folders were required for the features (like the hair and skin), with the only exception being the eyes. This was also the first time I outlined a CG in black (proving I need one of those graphical pens), so the image turned out pretty sharp.
I really do love this picture. It's so kaiwaii. And Eowyn's blush is so cute. ^^;;
Assasin
My second-ever CG, one of my biggest (MB-wise) due to the background. Originally drawn with ebony pencil, the sketch was fairly rough, but quite neat. I decided it was time to CG it.
Technically, this is more or less my character for the .hack series, though she doesn't have a name. I liked her eyes, because they have no highlight, and yet she's not nessicarly an evil character, you know?
I didn't really have any outline strategy yet. I would perform some filter on the original drawing layer, making the lines smudge and get super dark. But the filter isn't that sharp, which is why the picture is more soft and cloudy.
Outside of the not-so-goods, I'm still quite happy with this. It's very vibrant and contradictory - the background is bright while the character is more subdued.
left behind in empty places (Ballad of the Fallen)
The starter of it all. The guniea pig of every coloring experiment I've ever tried. This poor kid was originally drawn on the car trip to New Jersey in the summer of '05. Since then, he's been dubbed "the corpse" because of his blank eyes.
Nothing too special here. The outline is the original pencil lines, and the background is the sketchpaper. I really do like his eyes, however, because of the dramatic difference between the darkest and the lightest parts.
...Not much to say about this. *pwned*
